VOIP Service at Home and on the Road
by Jeffrey Loeb
Now that having high speed Internet is almost as common as having a home phone line, many users are starting to take advantage of low-cost Voice Over Internet (VOIP) long distance phone options. These VOIP services can provide unlimited long-distance (and local) calling for much less than many of the traditional long distance carriers.
There are many providers of VOIP services including Skype, Vonage, and others. A newcomer to the industry named MagicJack (www.MagicJack.com) has made it even easier (and cheaper). MagicJack sells a $40 USB device that lets you to simply plug your current analog phone into one end and insert the other end into the USB port of a computer that is connected to the Internet. That’s it! You are now able to make unlimited local and long-distance calls free for a year. After the first year, you pay $20 annually to continue the service.
For incoming calls, MagicJack even gives you a free inbound phone number and includes features such as voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting, three-way calling, and directory assistance.
Because the device installs no software on your computer it can be taken with you and used on any Windows based computer that is connected to the Internet. This allows you to take your home phone number with you when you travel and make and receive free calls from your hotel by simply plugging into your laptop. Don’t have an analog phone with you? No problem, you can even use your Bluetooth headset or a headset/microphone plugged into your computer.
